Dionne enjoying life with “Sanctuary Coffee”

Hey everyone

We’ve had a heap of new followers recently so wanted to introduce ourselves!

We’re Marcus and Rhian, the founders of Sanctuary Coffee

In 2019 we adopted our rescued ex racer, Dionne from our local greyhound rescue @wimbledongreyhoundwelfare in South West London – and this experience shone a light on a few things:

1. The extreme financial cost it takes to run an animal rescue

2. The lack of government-led funding available to animal rescues

3. The enormous value animal rescues have to a community

After adopting our Dionne, the three of us put our heads together to think about what we could do to help.

At the time, we were both earning less than £27k a year each, knee deep in overdrafts and living in London – so donating from our salaries could be really risky in case of any unexpected bills.

We decided to put Marcus’ career in coffee roasting to the test and start a brand. We knew it would take a while as neither of us had any business experience and so after a few years of saving (+ the dreaded pandemic) we got to work on Sanctuary Coffee

The idea? A coffee brand that exists to help fund animal rescues

The goal? To donate more money to rescues and shelter than we possibly could afford on our salaries

We opened our doors in October 2021 running our online shop, wholesale business and darting between events whilst balancing full time jobs

So far we have partnered with 7 animal rescues and have set a goal to donate another £10k in 2024
