Hound of the Month for July is Doug

We hope you enjoy reading the volunteers’ descriptions of their walks with the hounds. If you would like to find out more about Doug, please visit our kennels and talk with a member of staff.

The kennels are open daily for hound walking from 11am until 2pm and are located at Burhill Kennels, Turners Lane, Hersham, KT12 4AW.

When Doug arrived at the kennels one sunny Saturday afternoon, it was obvious to all of us that this big handsome lad was something special so we made the slightly bold decision to make him my walking buddy for the Great Global Greyhound Walk at Mogador the very next day. This is a big event attended this year by around 60 sighthounds and their humans along with some non-sighthound furry family members.

On the morning of the event, I arrived at the kennels to collect Doug, wondering what kind of day I was in for. He greeted me with a wag of his tail and was very happy to be the centre of attention in the busy kennel yard as we prepared to head off. Once in the car, Doug settled down quietly in the back for the journey. When we arrived at our destination, the car park was already busy with greyhounds and humans and Doug took it all in his stride, greeting other greyhounds enthusiastically. It quickly became clear that he is a very sociable dog easy in the company of hounds and humans alike. He walked calmly but enthusiastically enjoying all the sights and sounds. His reaction to other breeds was tested a number of times as we met off lead dogs of all shapes and sizes along the route and he barely noticed them. He also enjoyed a cooling paddle in a pond halfway round the route. At the end of the walk, we sat in the pub garden where he happily lay down in the shade with fellow kennel hound Max and enjoyed some water and sausages.

From what I can see, this dog is pretty perfect. Based on today’s walk, I have absolutely no concerns to report other than I don’t think he’s going to be around for long so if you’re looking for a big, friendly, happy walking companion, get yourself down to Hersham and ask to meet Doug before anyone else does – he is so ready for his forever sofa!
